FAQ

Please read through before deciding to adopt from me.

Where are you located?

I am located in Halethorpe, Maryland.
I have moved around the past few years; my rattery started in Minnesota and then I moved to Aurora, Colorado.  For those of you who live in Minnesota or Colorado, I unfortunately cannot give you any rats (unless you are willing to make a long trip or are able to setup pet transport).  But, I can recommend you to other great breeders in your area.

Can I buy a single rat from you?

Yes, you can.  But, you must provide me with pictures/proof that you already have a rat(s) at home.  I also have to make sure it would be appropriate to introduce a baby/other rat to your current rat(s), just so nothing bad would happen to my/your rats. For example, if you have younger rats, it would be okay to introduce a younger rat from my rattery.

Why are your rats more expensive than other rats?

My rats aren't what you'd adopt from the pet store.
I've created lines of rats that are healthy, well cared for, and are handled daily (since the day they are born).
You are paying for quality; you know where your rat is coming from.
I also perform blood/serology tests on my rats.
This ensures that my babies are disease free.
I am also working on "special" lines; rats that are uncommon, so they will cost a little extra.

Why do I have to make a deposit?

The deposit is beneficial to me in MANY ways. I've had a lot of people back out on me in the past;  I'll hold a baby for them for weeks and then they won't reply.  By paying a non-refundable deposit, I know that you are serious about buying. Also, the deposit helps me to care for all my rats; nearly all money made from breeding goes back into my breeding project! The deposit comes out of the rat's full adoption fee.  If a rat is $50 and you pay the 50% deposit when picking out your rat, you will pay $25 at pickup.  Also, the rat will be available again if you don't respond within 48 hours, when your rat is ready to go home.

Can I come visit the babies or come inside your home to check them out?

I allow adopters to usually come inside my home, but not my rat room (to prevent any outside pathogens from entering my rattery).  I usually don’t allow people to visit rats before they’re ready to come home, unless on special occasions. For example: A family to test out if they may have allergies to rats.

Do my rats come with anything?

I plan to include something with adoption in the future, like a hammock or an adoption certificate.  And if you are unable to supply a carrier, I can usually put them in a safe, comfy box for their ride home.  I am planning to sell some homemade extras in the future.  If you bring a carrier and don't have any bedding in it, I can usually give you bedding/cloth to put in it, just so your rat has a comfy ride home.  I can also provide some food so you can transition to the food you're using.

Can you deliver/ship your rats?

Currently, I can deliver up to 30 miles away, as long as gas money is included. If you are willing to setup pet transport, I will also be fine with doing that.

Can I breed a rat that I buy from you?

Yes, but only in certain conditions. You MUST request a breeding application.  It is an extra $40 for breeding rights.  After that, you own that rat and any litters you make with it. And, if you ever happen to have a litter using one of my rats, I might be interested in adopting! (:  I will also provide pedigrees/genetic records of the rat's lineage.

At what age can my baby rat come home with me?

I feel like I let my babies go a little earlier than most ratteries, about 6-8 weeks old.  I make sure my babies are fully weaned before going to new homes.  I feel letting them go a little earlier helps the babies bond to their new owners easier!  Some rats I will hold back a little longer (depending on the line); up to 12 weeks old.  If you're interested in adopting, I will always tell you when I think it's appropriate for a rat to come home!
